John Mercer Willey 26 Dec. 1846-19 June 1939 of Deep Creek in Norfolk Co. VA enlisted in Co. I 68th NC State Troops commanded by Col. Hinton. He served with both Gens. Lee and Johnston and saw active service for ten months in some of the most important battles in the Tar Heel State including the battle of Lenior County and Bentonville. he was never wounded. Last native born survivor of the Confederate War in Norfolk county and last surviving member of the Neimeyer Shaw Camp of the Confederate Veterans at Berkley.

Matthew was a member of the 68th NC Co K (stone at site was white marble with letter 'M' visible, stone is similar to those placed for CSA Veterans'
